“Loved his life, loved his family & loved his job”
That is how Erin D’heron Varga described her Dad, Deputy Chief James D’heron just prior to the 9th annual Jimmy D 5K run/walk outside Memorial Stadium in New Brunswick, NJ. A record crowd of race entrants & participants gathered on a humid Sunday morning to run, walk & pay tribute to D’heron who died in the line of duty on September 3, 2004 while responding to a fire at a residence in New Brunswick. Chief D’heron gave his life that day after saving 15 people inside the residence.
Proceeds from the 5K benefit the James D’heron Memorial Foundation, Inc., which in turn supports the Art Luf Children’s Burn Camp, The Saint Barnabas Burn Center, and more.
Members of the Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department have always participated in the race & post-race festivities but this was the first year a formal fire department team was entered for HPVFD.
Unfortunately we didn’t place in the Top 3 teams but a new tradition was born and members discussed joining more races as a team. Without question a great day was had by all as we honored Chief D’heron.
